Phasing

The ditch has been phased to the Middle Saxon period based on stratigraphy (as it cuts ditches 012AD00833, 012AD00763 and 012AD07228). The only diagnostic finds were two later Roman pot sherds.

Discussion

The ditch segment apparently butts onto enclosure 012AD00918 to the north, and may be contemporary. It is possible that, with segments 012AD00740 and 012AD00750 to the south, this is part of a segmented ditch, extending to the south Click here to see the interpreted segmented enclosure ditch  from ditch 012AD00918. Generally, all of these wide, short segments appear to be late in the sequence of events on the site.

The fill of the ditch was a dark (Munsell colour 10YR 3/2) sandy clay loam, with 5% chalk inclusions. Some daub, and quite a high level of charcoal flecking were present.

The ditch was cut into hillwash in the south, and into chalk in the north, with a bowl-shaped profile.
